Officials stated that a Michigan woman was defrauded of more than $13,500 after a man masquerading as a deputy called her and threatened to have her arrested unless she paid him. Thereafter, the man threatened to have her arrested at her home.

Authorities from Troy say a guy claiming to be an Oakland County deputy left a message for a residence earlier this month.

The man informed her that she had an arrest warrant out for her failure to appear in court when she contacted the number back. It was his threat to have her arrested at home if she didn’t pay the $16,500.

The victim informed the police that she was dubious, but the con artist persuaded her otherwise by phoning again and using the caller ID to prove that the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office was the source of the call.

Additionally, he faxed her what appeared to be an arrest warrant with her name. The woman was then moved to another person, who identified himself as a lieutenant. The victim was instructed to send money to the second fraudster in order to pay for the fictitious bond they said she had.

They were able to persuade the woman to send them $13,500.

When the woman contacted her lawyer after the incident, he suggested that she get in touch with the sheriff’s office and the court immediately.

Both verified that the individuals she spoke with were con artists.
