After reportedly stabbing his wife and his grandson in Sterling Heights on Thursday, a 74-year-old man was placed under arrest.

The 11900 block of Danforth Drive was the scene of a police response at approximately 7:20 pm. The man reportedly stabbed his wife with a knife when she woke him up from sleep, cutting her face and neck superficially, according to an initial investigation.

The man is believed to be suffering from dementia.

The man’s mid-20s grandson, according to police, stepped in and took a stab wound to the stomach after intervening. Outside the house, the victims fled.

According to the police, the man then started stabbing himself in the basement. When the responding police located the individual, they tased him until he dropped the knife. The father was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, along with his wife and grandchild.

“The officers did an amazing job, showing up, providing medical care to the injured as well as confronting an armed and dangerous subject. By utilizing less-than-lethal weapons to gain control of the suspect, they prevented a deadly force encounter and were able to get him medical treatment as well,” Sterling Heights police stated.
