ATLANTA, Georgia – In response to the measures implemented by Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, the NAACP has issued travel advice for people of color to the state.
The organization characterized the state as having a “hostile” environment for African-Americans.
In an effort to combat what he refers to as “woke ideologies,” Governor DeSantis has proposed making certain race-based teachings illegal.
Gerald Griggs, the president of the NAACP chapter in Georgia, stated to Atlanta News First that the chapter endorses travel caution.
“The first steps towards making sure that we maintain our heritage, our diversity, and inclusivity, as well as our hard-won civil rights are… “Those in positions of power within the government need to be made aware that using racist language will result in severe repercussions,” added Griggs. “I believe that Florida is making progress today.”
Griggs referred to the advice as a powerful statement for Governor DeSantis and other governors across the country, stating that it sends the clear message that hatred is not good for business.
“I plan on going to the beaches in Savannah, the mountains in North Georgia, and the beaches in Alabama,” he stated. “I also plan on going to Alabama.” “Florida is not on my travel itinerary.”
