MIAMI – On Thursday, a special tribute took place during a high school graduation ceremony to honor a young boy who was tragically shot and killed in front of his home eight years ago.
In March 2015, Marlon Eason, a 10-year-old boy, lost his life when he was struck by a stray bullet while playing basketball in the front yard of his home in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood.
Described by his family as a vibrant and energetic child, Marlon had a love for cars, Batman, and sports, like many boys his age.
Dorothy Ruffin, Marlon’s grandmother, shared with Local 10 News that she often wonders about the young man he would have become today. “He was a bright child, and I know he was eagerly anticipating this day of graduation,” she expressed.
Eight years later, Marlon’s loved ones gathered inside the auditorium of the Center of Life Academy to pay tribute to his memory.
Front and center at what would have been her son’s high school graduation, Elizabeth Ruffin, Marlon’s mother, was deeply moved by the occasion.
Also in attendance was Marlon’s former teacher, who expressed gratitude for having had the opportunity to teach him. “As his former teacher, I am incredibly grateful to have had Marlon Eason as my student, and he will forever hold a special place in my heart,” she shared.
During the ceremony, Marlon was posthumously awarded an honorary high school diploma, which was accepted by his mother and grandmother.
Overwhelmed with joy and clutching the diploma, Marlon’s family conveyed to Local 10 News that this moment would be etched in their memories forever.
“I am filled with immense happiness and emotion. I am simply overjoyed right now,” said Elizabeth Ruffin. “He should be here, walking across this stage.”
For Dorothy Ruffin, the special tribute stood as one of her proudest moments. “I feel like our dream has come true, even though he is not physically with us. The dream has come true,” she remarked.
Other family members, referring to Marlon by his nickname “Murv,” expressed their longing for him to be present for this milestone. “I miss my cousin Murv dearly, and I am thrilled that he received his diploma today. Rest in peace, Murv,” said Marlon’s cousin.
Marlon’s mother shared with Local 10 News that his diploma would be displayed in a dedicated room honoring her son within their home.
