The 40-year-old mother of three, Loretta Lynn Canter, was slain in Accokeek on Highway 210 close to Farmington Road. Prince George’s County Police were called to an accident involving a pedestrian, who was identified as Canter, at approximately 9:50 p.m. on November 22. At the scene, she was declared deceased.
Sandra Abarca Orellana, 52, a mother of three, was murdered by a car on November 21 after 9 p.m. while she was crossing a different section of Highway 210 near Oxon Hill, Maryland. An off-duty police officer was among the first to arrive at the scene of Orellana’s death, according to a news outlet. At the scene, she was also declared deceased.
Police stated that the car that allegedly struck Orellana was a burgundy, four-door sedan, but they did not provide a description of the vehicle that struck Canter. Police have requested the public’s assistance in locating the two distinct drivers, neither of whom stayed at the site.
Both women passed away while strolling along separate sections of Highway 210; since 2007, there have been about 100 recorded deaths on the same route.
In the same year, the Route 210 Traffic Safety Committee, a local public safety organization, began keeping track of fatalities on the so-called “highway of death” and has since tallied 94.

Eleven of the 21 fatalities on Highway 210 in 2024 were hit-and-run events. “I was hoping we could make it through the rest of the year without another fatality, and being so close to Thanksgiving, it’s just so sad,” Ron Weiss, the founder of the committee, told WRC in an interview.
In an emotional speech, Canter’s kids also talked about how much they will miss their mother. “She could have made Thanksgiving, her birthday, and Christmas if she had made it another month,” her son remarked, sobbing. To help cover the cost of the funeral, her family has created a GoFundMe page.
