A recall of about 11,000 retail units of organic eggs was notified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration because of possible salmonella contamination.
The information was made public on Wednesday by Handsome Brook Farms, which voluntarily recalled 24-count eggs that were marketed in many states under the Kirkland Signature name.
The company claims that starting on November 22, the potentially tainted eggs were offered for sale at 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
“The Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs with UPC 9661910680 are packaged in plastic egg cartons labeled with Kirkland Signature on the top. The recall only applies to units with the Julian code 327 and a Use By Date of Jan 6, 2025, which can be found printed on the side of the plastic egg carton. No other products are impacted by this recall,” the company stated “The recall was initiated after the company determined that eggs not intended for retail distribution were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging. Additional supply chain controls and retraining are being put in place to prevent recurrence.”
Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious or occasionally fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and others with weakened immune systems, may have contaminated the eggs in question.
A healthy individual may experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain as signs of a Salmonella infection. Rarely, if Salmonella enters the bloodstream, it can lead to more serious conditions such endocarditis, arthritis, and arterial infections.
According to Handsome Brook Farms, no complaints of disease have been made thus far.
If you have any of the eggs on the recall list, you should stop eating them, return them to your local Costco for a refund, or throw them out.
