An investigation is now underway regarding the sewage spill that occurred in Boynton Beach’s Intracoastal Waterway. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has stated that the city of Boynton Beach will provide a comprehensive summary report detailing the event, the quantity of wastewater released, the city’s response, and the results of water quality sampling.
The DEP will utilize this information for its ongoing regulatory review. Due to the spill’s impact on surface waters, water quality samples are being taken to ensure that bacteria levels remain within safe limits.
The DEP emphasizes its commitment to protecting Florida’s environment and the well-being of residents and visitors, stating that any unauthorized discharge is treated as a serious matter.
The investigation follows a health alert issued by the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County regarding the recent sewage spill, which was successfully halted on Thursday. It was reported that a total of 12 million gallons of sewage spilled into the Boynton Beach Intracoastal Waterways.
The DEP has outlined a three-pronged approach to address such discharges. Firstly, they work with the utility or facility responsible to identify and stop the release promptly. Secondly, they gather and analyze relevant information about the incident.
Lastly, they determine any necessary corrective actions, including measures to prevent future discharges. Enforcement actions, such as fines, penalties, restoration, or remediation, may be taken based on the nature of the violation and the circumstances surrounding the event. These actions can be implemented through a Consent Order or other enforcement mechanisms.
