A woman from Miami, Brittney Nicole Williams, 32, was arrested on Tuesday for committing two serious offenses. She allegedly misused her position as a third-party customer service agent to cheat AT&T out of over $200,000.
Officials stated that Williams, who resides in Coconut Grove, managed to deceitfully send 147 items to South Florida before being apprehended.
As per the arrest report, Williams wasted no time in taking advantage of her role at Alorica’s call center in Cutler Bay, located at 19500 S. Dixie Highway.
She initiated fraudulent orders right after starting on June 16, 2022.
AT&T and similar companies hire vendors like Alorica, based in California, to handle customer service.
Authorities mentioned that she fabricated unauthorized orders using account details of existing AT&T business clients.
She also added new lines to these accounts and dispatched the devices to various addresses in Miami, including her residence on Charles Terrace.
Williams “took advantage of the fact that these are large businesses with a significant number of accounts (i.e., Gap, Inc., Spirit Aviation, World Fuel, etc.), so adding lines to these accounts resulted in a delay in AT&T and the customer identifying the fraudulent activity,” according to a Miami-Dade detective.
According to the arrest report, Williams made their final purchase on November 10th, and an AT&T investigator notified the police about this on November 28th.
According to the report, Williams is no longer employed at Alorica.
“Since this activity was perpetuated by (Williams) working as a representative of an authorized vendor of AT&T, AT&T is responsible for the equipment losses, and as such, has adjusted those charges from the customers’ bills,” the investigator wrote. “AT&T has notified and compensated all affected customers.”
The police stated that AT&T lost $222,251. On Tuesday evening, Williams was apprehended at the Wayside Fruit & Vegetable Market, situated at 10070 SW 57th Ave. in Pinecrest.
She faces charges of first-degree grand theft and organized scheme to defraud.
According to court records, she was released on bond from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Wednesday.
