In connection to the 5-year-old boy’s death, his mother was detained in California, according to authorities, after he was discovered dead in a suitcase in Indiana.
The young child’s body was discovered in a vividly colored suitcase featuring a Las Vegas pattern on April 16, 2022, in a remote region of Washington County, Indiana, according to the authorities.
The boy was recognized as Atlanta’s Cairo Jordan six months later. He died at the age of five, according to the police.
Authorities declared in October 2022 that Dejaune Anderson, Cairo’s mother, had an outstanding arrest warrant for murder, neglecting a dependant that led to her death, and obstructing the course of justice.
At a press conference on Friday, Indiana State Police Sgt. Carey Huls stated that earlier this week, a detective “received information from a concerned citizen… which started the path to physically locate Dejaune Anderson.”
According to Huls, Anderson was captured on Thursday night in Arcadia, California, which is close to Los Angeles. He indicated that she was being housed at an LAPD detention facility.
Anderson’s apprehension was dubbed a “huge milestone” in the investigation by Huls.
Authorities said that Dawn Coleman, a second suspect, was detained in October 2022 on charges of obstructing justice and neglecting a dependant that resulted in death.
Coleman was accused by authorities of assisting Cairo’s mother in getting rid of the boy’s body, The Associated Press said.
According to the AP, Coleman entered a guilty plea to charges of conspiring to commit murder and was given a 30-year jail term with a five-year probationary period suspended in November 2023.
Huls declared on Friday that no suspects remained at large.
Cairo passed away around a week or less before his body was discovered, and an autopsy revealed that his cause of death was dehydration brought on by vomiting and diarrhea, according to the AP.
Huls commended the people of Washington County, saying they united to pay tribute to Cairo.
“Provided him with a funeral, with a headstone,” he stated. “There’s still flowers to this day that are placed on his gravesite — people praying for him and his family and that justice would be done.”
