Alabama Walmart Confirms Store Closure Just Days Before Christmas, Raising Food Desert Concerns

WPBN: Customers in Alabama are afraid of the worst due to the impending closure. On December 20, a Walmart Neighborhood Market store in Huntsville, which is about 100 miles from Birmingham, will close.

Financially, the location had fared poorly, according to the bosses.

“This decision was not made lightly and was reached only after a careful and thoughtful review process,” Lindsey Coulter, a Walmart communications director stated.

Some establishments have fallen short of expectations, Coulter acknowledged. Additionally, the pharmacy at the Neighborhood Market location will close on December 20.

Prescriptions can be moved to a different place by customers. But officials are worried about customers after hearing about the shutdown.

According to Oakwood University Health Community Director Robin Daly, the closest supermarkets are around two miles distant. Daly is concerned about customers without access to autos.

“They’re going to be going and getting their food from convenience stores, from gas stations, which do not have the fresh produce that they need to be healthy,” he continued.

Consumers think that the store’s closure was the incorrect move.
