The grocery store chain informed The Boston Globe on Saturday that seven Stop & Shop sites in Massachusetts will permanently close on October 31.
In order to better “position the company for growth,” Stop & Shop first said in July that it would eliminate 32 “underperforming” sites by November 2—seven of which were in Massachusetts.
According to the company’s July statement, employees at the closed locations will be given the opportunity to work in other capacities.
“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid stated.
According to a Stop & Shop representative, toward the end of this week, they will start offering product discounts at the shutting sites.
The representative added that they are donating 2,500 turkeys to nearby public housing buildings as part of their efforts to donate as much unsold food as possible in collaboration with neighborhood food pantries and nonprofits.
