Thanksgiving dinner was not limited to friends and family on Thursday, though this dish was far less conventional.
At a residence on the 400 block of Wedgewood Court in Duarte, a black bear was observed fishing in a garbage can for Thanksgiving food. In quest of a holiday feast, the bear was spotted wandering the neighborhood and scaling walls about 1:30 p.m.
The bear sniffed around a discarded Taco Bell bag and looked for food in a nearby garbage can, before idly wandering around the area and then withdrawing to the surrounding hills, according to footage taken at the scene.
Given that the community is just outside of the Angeles National Forest, encounters with wildlife are probably frequent.
However, authorities continue to advise locals who living in or near dense forests to lock up their trash cans and refrain from drawing tourists.
According to the National Park Service, “Bears learn quickly and will return to areas where they find food.
Not only can this be dangerous for people, but it is also harmful to bears.”

Since black bears go into a transitory state known as “hyperphagia,” or the fall feeding frenzy, in which they eat as much as they can in order to prepare for the winter, fall is one of the busiest times of the year for bears to search for food.
