After authorities discovered his roommate’s body buried in his backyard, a California man was taken into custody on suspicion of murder.

Regarding the suspected murder, 48-year-old Richard Thomas Martinez was arrested.

At 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Riverside Police arrived at a residence in Riverside, California’s 8700 block of Sylvan Drive after receiving complaints that a resident had been missing for a number of days.

Martinez, one of the residents, claimed to have slain his roommate during the first investigation at the house, according to the police.

After detaining Martinez, officers searched the property.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department dispatched cadaver canines and police investigators to the residence to aid with the investigation.

Detectives were alerted by the cadaver dogs to newly disturbed earth in the backyard. After they started excavating, detectives found human remains.

The victim was identified as Bradley Minder, age 31. Before Martinez allegedly killed Minder and buried him in the backyard, detectives said a preliminary investigation showed that Martinez and Minder had gotten into a fight.

Martinez is being held without bond at the Robert Presley Detention Center after being booked there. The issue is still being looked into.
