A 15-year-old girl from Mississippi shot her stepfather and killed her mother; she was given a life sentence.

The jury deliberated for two hours before finding Carly Gregg guilty on all charges. In the shooting on March 19 that claimed the life of her mother, Ashley Smylie, and injured her stepfather, Heath Smylie, Gregg was charged with both murder and aggravated assault. After the shooting, she was accused of concealing a security camera and tampering with the evidence.

The jury might decide whether Gregg was guilty or not because of his insanity.

“Long week, sad day. Carly Gregg is evil. That’s not easy to say, but the truth of the matter is sometimes evil comes in young packages, small packages — and this is one of those cases,” Bubba Bramlett, district attorney for Rankin and Madison counties stated. “She’s fixing to go to prison for the rest of her life. You hate that; she’s 15 years old, but that’s exactly where she belongs.”

Kevin Camp, Gregg’s defense lawyer, told the jury that everything has been very difficult for Gregg’s family and pleaded with them not to add to their suffering by giving Gregg a life sentence.

While the verdict was being read, Gregg couldn’t stop crying. When the verdict was read in court, Heath Smylie’s grandparents and Gregg’s parents were there, and they seemed to be encouraging her with their lips.

In addition, Gregg received a life term for shooting her stepfather and a 10-year sentence for tampering with evidence. Lawyers argued that she was not offered the chance to be released on parole.

“She’s doing OK, she’s hanging in there,” Camp stated. “This was a tough case from the get-go. This jury had a very, very tough decision to make.”

Gregg’s lawyers stated they want to file an appeal.
