The Property Tax/Rent Rebate program in Pennsylvania is getting ready to award $266 million, a significant increase over prior years, beginning this coming Monday.

At the Philipsburg Senior Resource Center on Thursday, Governor Josh Shapiro made the news. He emphasized the program’s growth and its vital role in helping seniors and people with disabilities who are struggling financially due to inflation.

“The Property Tax Rent Rebate program is a lifeline for Pennsylvania seniors and people with disabilities, and we passed the largest targeted tax cut for our seniors in nearly two decades to expand this program to help put money back in their pockets,” Governor Josh Shapiro stated.

Refunds will start to be sent to more than 442,000 Pennsylvanians around the Commonwealth on Monday as a result of my bipartisan commitment to Pennsylvanians to reduce expenses.

“But there are at least 125,000 more Pennsylvanians who are eligible but haven’t applied yet – and we want everyone who is eligible to get this money, so we have extended the application deadline to December 31. If you qualify but haven’t yet applied, go to pa.gov/PTRR to apply now.”

The program’s modifications include raising the income threshold for homeowners and renters to $45,000, with yearly adjustments for inflation, and raising the maximum regular rebate to $1,000.

The flexibility of the refund monies was highlighted by Secretary of Aging Jason Kavulich, who pointed out that they may help with necessary costs like health aids, auto repairs, or improving quality of life with products like lift chairs.

“What I think about is new hearing aids or new dentures when insurance doesn’t cover them,” Kavulich noted.

“[Or] new tires for your car so it passes inspection, and a new lift chair that you always wanted, or treating your grandkids to ice cream without having to worry about making a sacrifice down the road.”
