According to the El Paso Police Department, an El Paso man was taken into custody after shooting a Circle K employee in the head. Aggravated assault is the charge against 22-year-old Jorge Armando Lopez.

Police were called to a Circle K at 12680 Montana on August 2 in response to reports of gunfire. Edgar Roman Mata, age 21, had been shot in the head, and when police got there, they discovered that the victim was bleeding profusely.

Witnesses at the scene who described the shooter—later identified as Lopez—were interviewed by police.

According to police, Lopez entered the Circle K and threw a drink at Mata, according to CCTV evidence. After that, Mata can be seen exiting the car and puncturing Lopez’s tire before taking off.

At the end of the surveillance film, Lopez is seen chasing after Mata, shooting him with a gun, and then leaving the area. Lopez was later located by police at 12820 Edgemere, where he was taken into custody and given a $1 million bond.

The city claims that after Mata was transferred to a hospital, his injuries ultimately claimed his life.

According to the police, Lopez was identified as the same suspect in both cases after they were previously dispatched to the same Circle K in connection to a man carrying a gun.

Police say that Crimes Against Persons is looking into the event and that they are collaborating with the District Attorney’s Office to raise Lopez’s case from aggravated assault to murder.
