WPBN: Much colder, arctic air will flow in behind the storm front that delivered rain all Thursday.
There is a Cold Weather Advisory in place from midnight tonight until 8 a.m. on Friday, according to the Mobile National Weather Service.
The NWS’s “cold weather advisory” is a new product for this year; it has replaced the previous “hard freeze” and “wind chill” advisory formats.
This indicates that extremely low temperatures—with wind chills as low as 15 degrees—are anticipated. Long-term exposure to wind chills below 25 degrees can be dangerous for both people and animals.
Parts of southeast Mississippi, northwest Florida, and south central and southwest Alabama are under this advisory.
Wear suitable clothes, such as gloves, a cap, and heavy coats with layers, and exercise caution when you’re outside. Make sure kids are bundled up, especially on Friday morning when they are at the bus stop. Limit your time spent outside as much as you can.
Keep the four Ps in mind. People, pipes, plants, and pets. Pets should be kept indoors whenever feasible. Check on elderly neighbors, family, and friends on a regular basis.
Tonight, leave the faucets running to avoid frozen and burst pipes. It’s a good idea to cover outdoor plants or bring potted plants inside because air temperatures below 30 degrees will also harm delicate crops and plants.
With highs in the low 50s, Friday afternoon will also be chilly. There will be wind chills in the 40s.
