Cold Weather Alert Preparing for December's Chill in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia

Cooler temperatures are already being felt in Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida as November draws to a close. There is a need for households to get ready as several counties in the area are under frost advisories and freeze warnings.

More people are preparing for the cold at Mandarin’s Hagan Ace Hardware. The need of preparedness was underlined by General Manager Doug Kreie.

“By being prepared, the accidents don’t happen,” Kreie stated.

As temperatures dip into the 30s—and even the 20s in some places—the business has noticed an increase in demand for space heaters. Kreie provided important safety advice for people who depend on space heaters to stay warm.

“Make sure they’re clear from drapery or tablecloth or blankets off the couch or the bed,” he suggested.

Extension cables are a regular concern, and the Electrical Safety Foundation emphasizes the dangers of using heaters improperly. Every year, extension cables are connected to about 3,300 home fires, which cause 270 injuries and 50 fatalities. The group emphasizes how crucial it is to connect space heaters straight to wall outlets.

During cold spells, taking care of plants becomes as important as staying warm. According to Kreie, many plants have trouble with temperatures lower than 40 degrees.

“The leaves will burn and die. Basically, it’s not a heat burn—it’s a freezer burn. It’s cold,” Kreie stated.

To shield plants from the chilly air, he suggested using frost blankets. “We have frost blankets trying to keep them elevated but over them to keep that cold air from getting the leaves themselves,” he said.

Hagan Ace Hardware provides individualized advice for people who are uncertain whether their plants can survive the cold. To receive personalized assistance, customers can phone the store or drop in a photo of their plants.

As December brings with it a cold start, locals are being advised to wear layers, monitor home safety, and make sure plants are secured this weekend.
