It’s time for the well-known warehouse store Costco to pay out after getting into some trouble recently. The Kirkland Signature wet wipes, which are not one of Costco’s mainstay items but are nonetheless a mainstay for many of its devoted clients, have resulted in a $2 million settlement with consumers over deceptive advertising.
As the claim time draws to a close, eligible customers—especially those in New York—who purchased these wipes between July 1, 2011, and May 31, 2017, must move quickly to claim their portion.
The case that led to this settlement claimed that the Kirkland Signature wipes, which are sold under the Costco-owned brand, were not flushable. “Consumers argue they would not have purchased the wipes if they knew they were not truly flushable as advertised,” according to Top Class Actions.
The lawsuit emphasizes how the wipes seriously harmed sewer lines, septic tanks, and plumbing even though they were touted as flushable.
As a result, many customers had to pay for unforeseen and expensive repairs. Customers claim that if they had known the truth about these wipes’ flushability, they would not have bought them or at the very least, they would not have flushed them.
As is typical in these kinds of agreements, Costco has chosen to pay $2 million to resolve this false advertising class action complaint, but this does not mean that the firm has admitted wrongdoing. With a minimum guaranteed payout of $7.50 and a maximum of $55.90, eligible class members can receive $1.30 for each product they purchase, up to a total of 43 products.
Although this Costco settlement sum might cover the product’s cost, it would not cover any repairs that tenants or homeowners have had to do to fix their damaged pipes.
Even without a complete admission of culpability, this payment might enable many people fight their insurance carrier to pay for the majority of any plumbing costs they might have received as a result of the improper disposal of the wipes.
If the pipes are actually blocked, even people who have not yet been impacted by the wipes in the pipes might be able to prevent the problem from becoming a major one in the home by getting them checked out beforehand.

The deadline for claiming the settlement from Costco
Customers must file a legitimate claim form by August 9, 2024, in order to be eligible for a share of the Costco settlement. In order to get the compensation, it is imperative that this process be finished within the allotted period.
Thankfully, there is no need for proof of purchase, which makes it easier for people without receipts to file claims.
Customers will not be able to bring more lawsuits in the future or receive reimbursement for larger expenses should they be able to present the courts with more substantial proof of damage if they choose to object to the settlement or withdraw themselves from it before August 9, 2024. Keep in mind that this is also the cutoff date for filing a claim.
By this date, anyone who object to the settlement or would rather not take part must also follow the prescribed steps to opt out. August 30, 2024 is the date of the settlement’s final approval hearing. The conditions of the settlement will be examined and its legality verified during this hearing.
