At 10:21 p.m. on Monday night, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office received a report that a well-intentioned citizen had tragically passed away while attempting to assist an injured dog on University Boulevard South, just south of Atlantic.
According to the JSO, the woman had parked her vehicle in the center turn lane and was attempting to assist the dog that was lying in the lanes heading south.
She was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. She had been killed in a collision with a compact SUV.
According to the investigators, the driver of the SUV stayed at the site to cooperate with the police, and there was no indication that he or she was impaired in any way.
This is the ninth person to lose their life as a result of an accident that occurred on University Boulevard, according to the data kept by the JSO.
So far in 2018, there have been 137 people killed in traffic accidents in Duval County.
