WPBN: Residents in Edgefield, Fairfield, Greenville, Kershaw, Lexington, and Richland counties in South Carolina are being reminded by the Department of Social Services (DSS) that the deadline for submitting an application for benefits under the Disaster Supplemental Assistance Program (DSNAP) for losses made as a result of Hurricane Helene is drawing near.
Residents can pre-register online and visit the DSNAP site in their county of residence, which is given below, between the hours of eight in the morning and five in the afternoon. Beginning on Wednesday, December 11, and continuing through Friday, December 13, 2012.
Loss of food alone is not a qualifying criteria for DSNAP assistance; however, residents who were living within the designated counties at the time of Hurricane Helene and who experienced unreimbursed disaster losses or damage as a direct result of the storm on September 27, 2024 may be eligible for benefits under the Emergency Food Assistance Program (DSNAP).
The following are examples of losses or damages in this scenario:
- The home has been damaged or destroyed in some way.
- Loss of income or inability to access income, including a reduction or termination of income or a considerable delay in getting revenue as a result of complications associated to the disaster.
- Expenses incurred as a result of a disaster (such as repairs to a home or business, temporary housing, evacuation, and so on) that are not anticipated to be reimbursed during the period of time that the disaster benefit is in effect.
Reconsideration will be given to each and every DSNAP application. In the event that you choose to submit your application for DSNAP benefits in person, you should take the following into consideration:
- Evidence of one’s identity
- Providing Evidence of Your Address
- Evidence of Financial Support
- Evidence that the storms caused damages that were not paid and that were incurred as a direct result of the storms
- Evidence that money has been lost or may not be accessible
DSNAP is not available to people who are currently receiving SNAP benefits because of government regulations and restrictions.
Not eligible to reapply are households that submitted an application for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (DSNAP) between November 11th and November 21st and were denied after a telephone interview.
Requesting a fair hearing is something you can do if you do not agree with the decision that was made regarding your DSNAP application. You can do this by phoning 1-800-311-7220 or writing to the local county DSS office in your area.
