Authorities suspect an American tourist died and his wife suffered serious injuries on Tuesday while relaxing in a hot tub at a private resort in Mexico. The malfunctioning equipment is likely what caused their deaths.

The General Prosecutor’s Office for the State of Sonora claimed that at approximately 10 p.m. at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Penasco, the 43-year-old man—whom the authorities have only identified as Jorge G.—of El Paso, Texas, was slain, and Lizette Z was critically injured.

According to reports from the General Prosecutor’s Office, the wife had burns that seemed to indicate she had received an electric shock that may have been caused by defective wiring.

According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, a witness who knew the couple claimed to have seen them in the outside hot tub, but none of them was moving.

The onlooker was startled when she attempted to assist the pair and had to call for assistance.

According to the El Paso Times, the official cause of death is still unknown.

An investigation is presently underway into the incident. Sara Gaitan-Perez, an Arizona resident visiting the resort, told Arizona Daily Star that although she and other guests attempted to help the victims, the man was unconscious when she got there.

“We had just come from the pool, and my husband and son were in that very same (hot tub) about an hour before,” she stated to the newspaper.
