According to accounts, a gang-related fight broke out inside Nevada’s only maximum-security prison, resulting in the deaths of three prisoners and the injuries of nine more.
According to the Associated Press, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Ely State Prison in a rural, eastern portion of the state, resulting in a lockdown.
Although the battle was called a “altercation,” according to Nevada’s Department of Corrections, no officers were harmed. The identities of the prisoners who passed away and the situations of those who were hurt were kept secret.
As the state’s “designated maximum-security prison,” Ely State Prison can house up to 1,183 convicts, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

At the moment, the facility employs 400 people. The deaths at Ely State Prison follow the deaths of two other prisoners, ages 38 and 49, in April and May of this year.
Several prisoners there went on a hunger strike in December 2022 in protest of what they perceived to be dangerous conditions and insufficient food servings, according to supporters and some family members.
