On Tuesday, a courageous Baltimore lady swimming from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Annapolis to Inner Harbor accomplished a grueling 24-mile swim. Despite the fact that no one had ever done the swim before, marathon swimmer Katie Pumphrey was unflappable and made history.
In an attempt to complete one of her longest swims ever, Pumphrey dove into the Bay at Sandy Point State Park at 3:19 a.m. She is the perfect swimmer for the job because she has always loved swimming, even as a little child.
The Triple Crown in Open Water Swimming was accomplished by Pumphrey in 2021, making her the 73rd woman in history to accomplish the feat.
She had to swim 28.5 miles in Manhattan, New York City; the English Channel between England and France; and the Catalina Channel in California in order to complete the Triple Crown swim.
Pumphrey expects that the Marathon Swimmers Federation will approve of the route that was taken on Tuesday, making it possible for others to take it in the future.

This year saw the Inner Harbor deemed fishable and swimmable following decades of cleanup efforts.
In just 14 hours, Katie reached the milestone, becoming the first person to ever do so. To record the achievement, two observers followed the swimmers.
According to Pumphrey, this swim is a celebration of the harbor’s swimmable condition and her love letter to Baltimore.
She showed up at the Harborplace Amphitheater at approximately five o’clock in the evening, sealed that letter, and was met with cheers from scores of fans.
