Makayla Peacock, who was only 19 years old, met Mallery James at a Taco Bell parking lot in Forsyth County in July, and the young woman consumed tablets provided to her that were laced with fentanyl, according to Georgia authorities. This is why Makayla Peacock is dead.
According to the police, Peacock paid $100 for them from James. James is nineteen as well.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Sandy Springs Police said that James faces charges of aggravated involuntary manslaughter resulting in a fentanyl overdose. April saw Georgia Gov.
Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia signed “Austin’s Law” into law in April. This law established the term “aggravated involuntary manslaughter” and makes it illegal for anybody to be found guilty of producing or distributing fentanyl-containing substances with the intent to kill.
The Drug Enforcement Administration claims that fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that has an analgesic potency that is 50 times greater than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine.
When Sandy Springs Police arrived at Peacock’s residence on June 6 in response to a medical call, they discovered her unconscious. Peacock’s mother discovered her slumped over in bed and unresponsive.
Peacock overdosed on fentanyl, as confirmed by a toxicology analysis from the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office. During the course of the inquiry, investigators claimed to have discovered that James had supplied Peacock the pills. On July 25, James was taken into custody at the Fulton County Jail after an arrest warrant was issued.
On August 16, James appeared before a judge for the first time in Fulton County for a preliminary hearing. She was freed after posting a $50,000 bond.
What relationship, if any, the women had before Peacock passed away is unknown. Peacock’s family described her as a “amazing young lady who lit up every room she was in” in an online obituary. Peacock was born in Atlanta.
According to the DEA, a record 79.5 million fentanyl tablets and about 12,000 pounds of fentanyl powder were found in the United States in 2023.
The Atlanta metro area has shown to be a specific hot spot for fentanyl, according to DEA officials, despite the fact that the drug is thought to be a nationwide epidemic.
