A Colorado father who killed his wife and infant boy while their small daughter was home and claimed to have been hearing things will be imprisoned for the rest of his life.

On Thursday, 31-year-old David Weingarten received two life sentences for the murders of 26-year-old Lizet Salinas Mijanos and their 8-month-old son Georgie Weingarten. Two counts of first-degree murder were found against him the day before.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, at around 6:55 p.m. on February 1, officers answered a 911 call from a male adult who reported a “medical emergency” in a single-family home located in the 3200 block of Heather Glen Drive.

According to local news station KKTV, when first responders arrived, Weingarten told them he had been “hearing things” before to killing Lizet and Georgie.

“I just shot my wife and son,” He told the approaching authorities, as per the court documents. “I’ve been feeling not good lately and something just came over me. I don’t know what happened. I’ve been hearing things, and I don’t know what’s going on. My wife and son are both dead I believe.”

After that, officers went inside the house and discovered Lizet and the infant, who both seemed to have been shot. On the spot, they were both declared dead.

According to authorities, Weingarten was arrested when the CSPD Violent Crimes Unit was dispatched to the scene to take over the investigation. According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, Weingarten admitted to having “bad thoughts” and feeling uncomfortable as a result of his son’s weeping when questioned by authorities.

Before choosing to shoot his wife, he paced his house earlier that evening after going to his car and grabbing the revolver he kept there, he told police.

Then Weingarten acknowledged that he had shot his son on purpose. In response to detectives’ questions about why he shot the baby, he allegedly said it was because the boy’s excessive crying caused him anxiety.

The 2-year-old daughter of Lizet and Weingarten was unharmed. Lizbeth Salinas, the sister of Lizet Mijanos, has been given custody of the girl. “I intend to raise the girl as my own,” she said.

She added that being a good mother was her sister’s dream.

“She was always serious, but once you got to know her, she was full of joy,” she stated. “She would make jokes and be the silliest person. We talked once in a while. But not as much as I wish we did.”

To assist Lizbeth with the costs of parenting the daughter, a GoFundMe page has been established.
