Verify your eligibility for SNAP benefits if you are a college student experiencing financial hardships purchasing food. Some students lose out on these Food Stamp checks, which can total up to $292, although not all students are eligible.
Generally speaking, SNAP is only available to students who attend technical school, trade school, college, or university more than half-time if they qualify for an exemption.
Therefore, if you find yourself in this circumstance, you should see whether you can obtain an exemption. Remember, “half-time” attendance is defined by the higher education institution. College students are, of course, also subject to the general Food Stamp restrictions.

Exemptions from SNAP for college students
After confirming that you are eligible for SNAP, you should review the following potential exemptions:
- are 50 years of age or older.
- are younger than eighteen
- possess a physical or mental impairment.
- participate in a work study program funded by the federal government.
- participate in a work study program funded by the state.
- Put in at least 20 hours of work (paid employment)
- In addition to working 20 hours a week, self-employed individuals are required to receive “weekly earnings at least equal to the federal minimum wage multiplied by 20 hours.”
- Participate in a program of on-the-job training
- Take care of a child under six.
- Having a child under the age of twelve while attending college full-time as a single parent
- Take care of a child between the ages of 6 and 11 without the required childcare so that you can work 20 hours a week, go to school, or engage in work-study.
- TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) is being received.
- The SNAP E&T program will assign you to a higher education institution.
