Fort Lauderdale Police Investigate Downtown Kidnapping and Carjacking Cases

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. – The Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) is currently investigating two cases of kidnapping and carjacking that occurred downtown last week. A suspect was apprehended on Friday.

The initial incident took place on a Saturday morning in a downtown parking lot. During this event, a couple was robbed at gunpoint while sitting in their car. The driver managed to escape, but the subject drove away with the female passenger.

A similar incident happened on Friday morning, after which the police distributed flyers featuring a sketch of the person of interest. Residents were encouraged to contact Crimestoppers with any relevant information.

Although there are similarities between the cases, authorities have yet to establish definite connections or confirm the suspect’s identity.

Shortly after distributing the flyers, various police departments pursued a vehicle that matched the description of the car involved in the Friday morning carjacking.

The FLPD, in cooperation with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), and Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office (PBSO), collaborated to apprehend the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Lias Corker.

Corker now faces charges such as aggravated fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, and driving with a revoked license. He has been booked into the Palm Beach County Main Detention Center. However, authorities remain cautious about definitively linking Corker to the broader carjacking and kidnapping cases.

Numerous tips from concerned citizens have been received and are being thoroughly investigated by the police. The FLPD is persistently working to untangle the intricate series of events and establish any potential connections that could lead to resolving these troubling incidents.

If you possess any information about this crime, please call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you have the option to remain anonymous, and you might be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
