Anyone can experience not having enough money to get by. For low-income and resource-rich Americans who satisfy one of the three primary criteria listed below, the Federal Government provides funding for the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit program.
Those who are blind, have a disability, or are 65 years of age or older will receive these monthly payments. Therefore, having little or no resources and a modest salary is insufficient.
Following Social Security’s announcement of the 2025 COLA hike, SSI benefits will increase
All Social Security and SSI recipients will get a 2.5% boost as a result of the 2025 COLA rise. For retirees and SSDI recipients, this increase will take effect in January 2025; for Supplemental Security Income users, it won’t take effect until December 31, 2024.
Following COLA, the new maximum amounts for Supplemental Security Income are:
- Those who are eligible for the highest amount can get up to $967.
- The maximum amount that married couples who meet the requirements can get is $1,450.
- The highest amount that eligible essential persons can get is $484.
- Remember that through December 30, 2024, the existing amounts are $943, $1,415 and $472. To be eligible for this benefit in 2025, you must meet additional requirements, such as having a disability, being blind, having little to no resources, and being at least 65.

Extra requirements for SSI and how to apply?
In addition to the requirements listed above, you must be a citizen or national of the United States.
Supplemental Security Income may also be available to some non-citizens who fall under one of the specific alien classifications provided by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Remember that you also need to live in one of the 50 states. Otherwise, the District of Columbia and the Northern Mariana Islands are viable places to call home. Other standards need also be met by the absent citizens.
For a full calendar month or 30 days in a row, SSI recipients are not permitted to leave the 50 States, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands. You will not be eligible if you are confined or in prison. Filing is required, and there may be other special requirements.
