Granbury, TX- A mother from Granbury is expressing her gratitude to firefighters for saving her two-year-old son from a fire. The thrilling rescue was captured.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday, dispatchers in Hood County were alerted to a fire at an apartment building located in the 300 block of Parkwood in Granbury.

Phylicia Keen recounted to NBC5 that she was jolted awake by the noise of breaking glass. Upon her investigation, she discovered flames erupting from her living room window and thick smoke engulfing her apartment.

Keen reported that she managed to get her 4-year-old son to safety, but as she attempted to access the back bedroom where her two-year-old was sleeping, the smoke overwhelmed her.

In a matter of moments, the dedicated team from Granbury’s Volunteer Fire Department sprang into action.

One team fought the fire, while another team focused on rescue efforts. Edited footage from body cameras shared on the GVFD Facebook page shows firefighters elevating a ladder to the second floor and breaking a window to gain entry.

As reported by GVFD, a firefighter entered the bedroom to look for the child. Following a tense period, the child was located and safely extracted through the window.

He was transported to a hospital in Fort Worth for medical care.

“We were very lucky. If it had been another 5 minutes or less the outcome may not have been as good,” said Capt. Brad Snyder. “He [was] coughing, but you know, that coughing to me was just the sound of joy.”

From her son’s hospital room, Keen expressed her disbelief and continues to relive the frantic moments of not being able to contact her youngest child.

“To see my kids go through that – for my four-year-old to question if his baby brother is okay and to say he no longer has a home. To see my baby just the way [paramedics] brought him in was really hard,” Keen said.

Liam, the youngest son, is currently receiving treatment for carbon monoxide exposure, and the family remains optimistic about his release within the next day.

The family’s residence was obliterated, taking with it almost all of their belongings.

Nonetheless, Keen feels an immense sense of gratitude.

“First responders are actual heroes. For real angels and heroes,” Keen said. “Even in the small town of Granbury, Texas the volunteer fire department – they were great. Every single one of them.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to GVFD.
