According to reports, a man who was threatening German police officers with a Molotov cocktail and a pick hammer was shot on Sunday. Hours before Hamburg, a city in northern Germany, was the site of a soccer match in the Euro 2024 competition.
According to police spokeswoman Thilo Marxsen, the man was struck in the leg by a bullet when police opened fire because he would not lay down the hammer and Molotov cocktail.
Hamburg police stated in a message on X, that the man was receiving medical attention, but they did not provide any other information. Nobody else sustained any injuries.
The incident happened in the city’s downtown St. Pauli neighborhood, where thousands of supporters were reportedly swarming before Sunday’s Netherlands vs. Poland match, according to German media.
According to the police spokesman, there was no first indication that the incident had anything to do with the soccer match.
According to local media, the event happened on the Reeperbahn, a popular thoroughfare and hub for nightlife in the city, at around 12:30 local time. The BBC, a CBS News partner, said that it was close to a fan zone for fans of the Dutch national team.

Fearing potential fan unrest and terrorist attacks, German officials have placed police on high alert for the tournament, which started on Friday and runs until July 14.
An Afghan man was shot by police on Friday in a town in eastern Germany after he killed a fellow countryman and injured three others while they were watching the Germany vs. Scotland game on television. According to police, the attack’s motivation is still unknown as of Sunday.
