Hillsborough Authorities Nab Suspect in Ruskin Teen's Death

A teenager who shot a gun at a youngster and tampered with evidence was taken into custody by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were called to the 900 block of Seminole Sky Drive in Ruskin on March 30, 2024, at 4:37 p.m.

The gun went off as he moved it, striking the 14-year-old victim in the chest. Cody Shimooka, the 15-year-old caller, told deputies that he was helping pack up a neighbor’s house when he discovered the pistol.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital but ultimately passed away from his wounds.

Following a comprehensive investigation, investigators from the HCSO found evidence that refuted Shimooka’s claims.

Prior to the arrival of deputies, detectives discovered that the suspect had tampered with tangible evidence at the scene.

“This type of behavior has no place in our community. Teenagers should be focused on going to school and making friends, but now we have a tragedy that will forever change the lives of all those connected,” Sheriff Chad Chronister stated. “I commend our detectives for their dedication and perseverance in seeking justice for the victim and his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time.”

Following a meeting with the State Attorney’s Office, HCSO agreed to charge Cody Shimooka with the subsequent offenses:

  • Manslaughter with a firearm
  • Minor in Possession of a Firearm
  • Tampering with Physical Evidence
