Indiana Lawmakers to Debate Trans College Athletes and Kids on Social Media in 2025

WPBN: On Wednesday, the return of the Indiana legislature to the statehouse marks the beginning of a new legislative session.

By preparing and voting on a new budget, the legislature of Indiana will decide how the state’s money will be spent over the next two years. This decision will be made this year.

However, the budget is only one of the priorities. Later on this week, legislators will meet to discuss the additional issues that they wish to address.

Hundreds of measures have already been submitted by legislators, and they cover a wide range of topics, from the use of social media by minors to the testing of law enforcement officers for alcohol and drugs.

Immediately following the use of fatal force by a law enforcement officer, House Bill 1047 would mandate that the officer be tested for the presence of narcotics and alcohol.

At this time, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department only administers a portable breath test to officers who are suspected of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

During the election of 2024, an issue that became a political lightning rod was the subject of another measure that was introduced by a politician in the House of Representatives. To prevent transgender female collegiate athletes from competing on women’s college teams, House Bill 1041 would make it illegal for them to do so.

Rep. Michelle Davis, a Republican representing District 58, is the sponsor of this measure.

Two years earlier, she authored a law that effectively prohibited transgender girls from participating on girls’ sports teams from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. In spite of Governor Eric Holcomb’s rejection of the bill, lawmakers voted to override the governor’s decision.

It has been two years since the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which is the organization that oversees college athletics, changed its “transgender student athlete participation policy.”

In accordance with the policy, the decision about participation is left up to the national governing body of each sport.

The international federation of the sport is the one that decides who gets to participate in the event that there is no governing organization. The rules established by the International Olympic Committee are used to determine participation in the sport in the event that none are available.

In a statement that Davis put out, she stated that the purpose of the measure is to ensure that college athletics are conducted in an honest and fair manner.

Her statement was that she drafted the measure after receiving feedback from parents in Indiana who are concerned about ensuring that female athletes have an equal opportunity to compete.

Her statement continued by saying, in part, “Biological differences undeniably affect athletic performance, despite the fact that males and females are of equal worth.”

It is essential that females compete against other girls, and that boys compete against other boys, in order to provide an equal playing field.

Legislators might also take into consideration a bill that would make it illegal for anyone under the age of 16 to use social media platforms, unless they obtain parental permission that can be verified.
