Over the weekend, authorities in Kentucky reportedly discovered a dead and decaying newborn inside the car trunk of a 22-year-old woman.
In relation to the infant’s death, Daira T. Mejia Aguilar was charged with one count of abuse of a body on Saturday after being placed under arrest.
According to Louisville ABC affiliate WHAS, at approximately 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department responded to a complaint at an apartment in the 700 block of Zorn Avenue after learning that a deceased baby was being hidden inside the house.
The kid had been “placed in a bag and hidden in a closet,” the caller informed the 911 dispatcher, according to a report from Louisville Fox affiliate WDRB.
First responders said that after entering the residence, they searched a closet and discovered a bag that had flies all over it and looked to have “possible blood” on it.
Mejia Aguilar was also contacted by police at the residence. She allegedly acknowledged giving birth to a newborn kid on Tuesday, July 2, when asked where the infant was.
Mejia Aguilar is believed to have confessed that she had not reported the child’s death and had been hiding its remains in her home after being formally placed under arrest and having her Miranda rights read.
According to an arrest citation, “she stated that she then wrapped the baby in a blanket, placed it inside of a trash bag, and then placed the bag in the closet of the apartment.” It is then said that Meija Aguilar said she had “moved the baby to the trunk of her car” before the police arrived.

According to reports, investigators found a dead newborn’s remains in the trunk of a car that Mejia Aguilar admitted belonged to her early on Sunday morning. Investigators characterized the baby, which was placed inside a trash bag and covered in a blanket, as “a full-term newborn in the early stages of decomposition.”
The victim’s gender was kept a secret by the authorities.
To find out the cause of death and whether the deceased was stillborn, passed away during Mejia Aguilar’s labor, or passed away after birth, authorities are awaiting the findings of an ongoing autopsy.
Mejia Aguilar’s next court date is presently set on July 16.
