Authorities from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office report that they detained a guy early on Sunday on suspicion of possessing a handgun and fentanyl.

A man dressed entirely in black was seen standing in a neighborhood off Gap Creek Drive at 2:15 on Sunday morning, according to a press release shared on the OCSO Facebook page. The individual was seen by deputies doing a security check.

The press release claims that although the individual attempted to flee after spotting law officers, they approached him and requested identification.

Fort Walton Beach resident Benjamin Smith, 24, is accused of dropping a black digital scale with white residue on it while rummaging through his pockets.

A search of the surrounding area produced a.25 caliber handgun, a glass smoking device, and a plastic bag that tested positive for fentanyl, according to the release. The scale also tested positive for methamphetamine.

Smith has eight felony convictions, the most recent of which was on July 10, 2023, according to authorities who conducted a criminal history check on him.

They claim he is now facing charges for having a handgun owned by a convicted criminal, having fentanyl, possessing drug paraphernalia, and other offenses.
