As Beryl approaches Texas, a number of Texas churches are getting ready to respond to the storm by sending out volunteers.
First Baptist Church of Pflugerville is a member of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention Disaster Relief team, which is made up of recovery teams whose job it is to give assistance to people who are in need.
Mike Northen, who oversees disaster relief for the nearby church, has spent the last 19 years sending teams to the worst-affected regions. He and the other volunteers’ jobs are to bring prepared meals.
When Beryl is expected to land in South Texas on Monday morning, three trailers that have already been loaded are scheduled to begin their journey. It is anticipated that between ten and fifteen First Baptist volunteers will travel.
“Our goal is to feed them the food that they need,” Northen stated.

According to Northen, their organization is one of the few kitchens capable of supplying 30,000–40,000 meals each day, and they collaborate closely with the American Red Cross and Salvation Army to provide the food.
Despite the ongoing ambiguity around the extent of Beryl’s devastation, Northen stated that maintaining people’s optimism is the most important thing.
“We’ve faced a lot of broken people,” Northen stated. “Even though there’s been a disaster that happened and we’re there to share that love and to help them all that we can.”
