According to investigators, a black bear and its three cubs broke through a partially shattered sliding glass door in the home of a 74-year-old man from Colorado and harmed him.
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the bear attack that occurred in Lake City on Thursday was the first one that has happened in the state this year.
Residents “heard a loud crash and saw the bears entering through the door” when the creatures broke into the house around 8:30 p.m., according to officials.
Officials added that the injured man attempted to shoo the bear out the door by grabbing a chair in response.]
“It’s certainly lucky we didn’t have a fatality, because it was close,” state Parks and Wildlife Officer Lucas Martin stated.
The three cubs were still inside the house when law enforcement and emergency services arrived, and the residents were trapped in a bedroom. The cubs were able to exit the house with the help of a county deputy.
Following confirmation of the sow and her cubs’ involvement in the incident, officials claimed the sow and her babies were put to death.
“It’s a terrible set of circumstances that, unfortunately, our district wildlife managers are routinely faced with,” Parks and Wildlife Area Wildlife Manager Brandon Diamond stated. “Clearly, these bears were highly habituated and were willing to enter an occupied house with the residents sitting just feet away. When a bear reaches this level of human habituation, clearly a lot of interaction with people has already happened.”
