According to police, a guy was detained during a violent attempt at carjacking at a Connecticut Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru, during which he allegedly bit a medic’s hand and punched a pregnant woman.

At 7:44 p.m. on Tuesday, the 28-year-old suspectā€”later identified as William Rodriguezā€”pulled into the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru at 704 Foxon Road in East Haven, Connecticut. According to a statement released by the East Haven Police Department on Tuesday, he parked his car “directly in front of the victim’s car while she waited at the drive-thru window.”

“He then exited his vehicle, entered the victimā€™s car through the passenger door, and demanded her keys. When the victim refused, Rodriguez began punching her. The victim managed to escape and ran inside Dunkin Donuts to seek help,” authorities stated.

When a female employee of Dunkin’ Donuts saw the attack, she quickly reported it to two male colleagues, who allegedly “rushed outside, where they confronted Rodriguez, who was struggling to operate the victimā€™s vehicle,” according to the police.

Rodriguez was able to be taken out of the car and restrained on the ground by the two male Dunkin’ Donuts employees until police came, according to law enforcement.

“Upon officerā€™s arrival, Rodriguez was taken into custody after a brief struggle. While receiving medical attention from an East Haven Fire Department medic, Rodriguez bit the medicā€™s hand,” authorities stated. “Rodriguez was subsequently transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he remained under guard until being transported to the East Haven Police Department for processing.”

The 2016 Hyundai Elantra Rodriguez was driving was later found to have been reported stolen out of New Haven. Following their arrival at the site, the New Haven Police Department seized possession of the car to conduct additional tests.

Rodriguez is currently facing a long list of charges, which include third-degree robbery, assault on emergency medical personnel, assault on pregnant women, two counts of larceny of a motor vehicle, interference with an officer, and breach of peace.

In addition to numerous outstanding arrest warrants totaling $475,000.00 and two open warrants from CSP Troop A and Troop I, Rodriguez is currently being held on a $250,000 bond for those crimes.

“The quick and courageous actions of the Dunkin Donuts employees, who helped bring this dangerous situation under control,” were praised by the East Haven Police Department.

The inquiry is still ongoing, and Rodriguez is still awaiting arraignment.
