According to state authorities, an Alaskan man is incarcerated for the murder of two adolescent females whose remains were discovered earlier this month under suspicious circumstances.

According to an updated press release from the Alaska Department of Public Safety, Shaquille Carawan, 20, is charged with numerous offenses, including two counts of first-degree and second-degree murder, one count each of tampering with evidence, misconduct involving a controlled substance, and providing alcohol to minors in a dry community.

The precise circumstances of the killings and what led to their discovery have not been disclosed by law officials. Nonetheless, according to police, the two women’s deaths were “violent.”

The bodies of Novely Rivers, 18, and Abigail Olson, 18, were found inside a house in Hooper Bay, a small hamlet on Alaska’s southwest coast, early on October 2.

The teens died from “multiple knife injuries,” according to the state medical examiner’s office, according to charge records that Alaska Public Radio affiliate KYUK, located in Bethany, was able to obtain.

State troopers asked for assistance from the public in their initial press release. The Native Village and the City of Hooper Bay announced a $10,000 prize for information that resulted in the “arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible for the deaths.”

Police emphasized that they were solely looking for “FIRST-HAND information” regarding the offense. Although it’s unclear if a tipster ultimately played a role in Carawan’s accusations, a subsequent press statement stated that local information and tips “aided the investigation.”

According to the records, investigators secured warrants and used text conversations to establish a connection between the defendant and the deceased.

According to state authorities, Carawan had made plans to give marijuana and home-brewed alcohol to Olson and Rivers on the day of their deaths, as evidenced by those text exchanges.

Investigators were able to investigate Carawan’s home after obtaining a second warrant and identifying who was linked to the other phone number.

According to the charging papers, state police discovered obvious evidence connected to the killings there.

Investigators allegedly discovered blood-stained shoes in the treads and a knife concealed between a refrigerator and a wall inside, which corroborated other evidence discovered at the scene of the murders.

According to state troopers, Carawan later admitted to the killings. On Saturday, he was taken into custody. At a Monday hearing, a judge who was evaluating the accusations determined that there was probable cause to keep him in custody.

“What I need to tell you, Mr. Carawan, is I will not be accepting a plea from you,” Magistrate Judge Darlene Johnson-Edwards stated. “However, we’ll be explaining the charges that are being brought against you in this case, and your case will be sent on for further proceedings.”

According to reports, the judge imposed a $1.5 million bond and barred the defendant from communicating with the relatives of the victims.

As of right now, Carawan is being held at the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center. His next scheduled court appearance is October 17.
