Maryland Food Poisoning Outbreak: 46 Hospitalized as Officials Launch Investigation

Following reports of several cases of food poisoning in Jessup, Maryland, firefighters sent 46 people to the hospital.

According to a news release issued by Howard County Fire and Rescue Services, firefighters and paramedics from the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene around 3:45 p.m. Monday in Jessup, approximately 15 miles southwest of Baltimore.

According to the department, victims who consumed the same meal were assessed and transported to many local hospitals in several counties, although they were deemed non-critical.

According to Fox 5 DC, the victims were thought to have consumed meals at the NAFCO Wholesale Seafood Distributor.

“At this time, we are not aware of any risk of further illnesses connected to this incident,” the Howard County Health Department said in a Facebook post.

Investigating the event are the Howard County Health Department and the Maryland Department of Health.

What was consumed by the victims?

The Howard County Health Department did not say what food the employee brought in, but investigators suspect the illness was caused by food that came from outside the distributor and was taken inside the facility and processed by an employee.

According to spokeswoman Lisa de Hernández, the department does not know the identity of the food poisoning sufferers or when they consumed the meal..
