During the current open enrollment season for Medicare plans, the most crucial task for seniors and eligible individuals is to assess their coverage, research their options, and make preparations for their medical care for the upcoming year.

Due to their unique characteristics, Medicare beneficiaries should pay particular attention to this. The eligible participants in this government health insurance program are Americans 65 years of age and older, as well as younger people with serious illnesses or disabilities.

When it comes to healthcare, these individuals are among the most vulnerable and in need of the greatest assistance, therefore the best thing they can do for their long-term health is to carefully consider their options.

Despite its difficulties and frequently unsupportive politicians who oversee its funding, the program, which was founded in 1965, has grown to offer millions of people basic medical coverage, making its cost increases unsustainable for those who can least afford them. It presently consists of four main components that recipients can use:

  • Hospital inpatient care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and home health care are all partially covered by Part A.
  • Physician and other health care professional services, outpatient treatment, home health care, durable medical equipment (such as hospital beds, wheelchairs, and walkers), and several preventative services (such as screenings, immunizations, and annual “Wellness” checks) are all partially covered under Part B.
  • Prescription medications (including several advised immunizations or shots) are partially covered by Part D. You can enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan that offers drug coverage or you can enroll in a Medicare drug plan in addition to Original Medicare.
  • Medicare Advantage, also known as Part C, is a private company-approved plan that provides an alternative to Original Medicare Parts A and B for your prescription and health coverage. Part A, Part B, and typically Part D are included in these “bundled” policies.

The impact of changes to Medicare Part D on insurers and beneficiaries

For the first time since 2006, the enrollment period has begun without a clear list of Medicare Part D prices.

This is because Part D has undergone some changes to prevent significant premium increases in 2025, such as capping insured prescription drug costs at $2,000 annually.

However, these changes have made it difficult for the private sector to gauge the pricing of the service that they will be providing.

However, other seniors are dealing with a more serious issue. Some insurance firms have chosen to leave specific markets or drastically cut back on their presence because they believe the changes in Medicare are too expensive for them to handle.

Many seniors now only have the public Medicare coverage options, which typically do not cover services like dental or vision, and no options for Part C or D.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal organization that oversees the Medicare, Medicaid, and Children’s Health Insurance Programs, has decided to cap the increases at $35 annually as a result of the remaining insurers’ increased propensity to raise rates, not only to cover costs but also due to the other lack of options in the market.

This implies that the base premium for Part D will probably increase by up to 6% in 2025, to $36.78, which is $2.08 higher than it was in 2024.

Seniors and those with disabilities, who frequently depend on fixed incomes, may feel additional strain even if this increase may not seem like much.

Although the CMS is trying to curve it by covering a greater payment for each Part D enrollee, these adjustments may have a significant financial impact on Medicare beneficiaries.
