Authorities in Miami-Dade County are looking into how a woman named Daisy Link, who is held without bail at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a second-degree murder charge, became pregnant last month.
Jail records indicate she is also facing a charge of battery by a detainee on a visitor or another detainee.
According to Juan Diasgranados, the Public Affairs Manager for Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation, on December 23, the inmate informed the MDCR staff that she believed she was pregnant.
Subsequently, she underwent a comprehensive medical examination, and the pregnancy was confirmed.
“The care, safety, and rehabilitation of all those in our custody remains our top priority,” Diasgranados said in an email to Local 10 News. “And while there is no evidence of sexual battery against our inmate at this time, the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy are currently under active investigation.”
Before getting a statement from MDCR, Local 10 News got an anonymous tip claiming that Link became pregnant by another inmate.
According to the tip, the male inmate is on the top floor, while Link is on the floor below. The tipster suggested that the male inmate ejaculated into a glove and somehow sent it down through an air conditioning vent to Link’s floor, resulting in her pregnancy.
The source mentioned that Link and the male inmate have never met in person, but inmates commonly communicate with each other through the vents.
“She has the right to her due process,” Barreto, Link’s sister said. “They never tried to help her out. They mocked her and laughed at her in the beginning when she asked for help. They never tried to exactly get the whole true story, they never took her to get a rape treatment. They never really tried to help her out until we reached out to the media, which they asked us not to do. Now they’re trying to come up with all kinds of different scenarios about what happened to her.”
Link’s pregnancy and the identity of her impregnator have not yet been confirmed by MDCR.
“The MDCR has healthcare procedures in place to ensure the safety of all those in our custody, any unborn child, and staff, in any case of pregnancy while in our care,” Diasgranados stated. “Pregnant inmates receive timely and appropriate prenatal care; specialized obstetrical services, when indicated by the CHS; and time for postpartum recovery. Additionally, any housing assignments for pregnant inmates are made in consultation with Correctional Health Services, and when necessary, the inmate’s outside obstetrician.”
Link was arrested because she shot and killed a man outside her Homestead home on June 25, 2022. The police said it was a domestic incident, and she shot the man in the leg. Surveillance video shows Link telling the victim, “I think I hit a major artery. You’ll be fine.” The arrest report doesn’t mention a reason for the shooting.
