According to a report, Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez shot himself in the leg in July while he was in Tampa. On Wednesday, he announced that he was withdrawing from the campaign for sheriff.
According to NBC Miami, Ramirez is making progress in his recovery and has decided against running for office at this time.
According to earlier reports, Ramirez shot himself while he was in Tampa attending the Summer Conference of the 2023 Florida Sheriff’s Association.
Officials said that Ramirez had an altercation with a lady in a hotel room, during which the woman threatened him with a revolver and pointed it at his head.
Ramirez was given permission to depart after the woman told the police that she did not feel in any danger.
Shortly after that, while he was traveling down Interstate 75 in the Riverview area, officials say he pulled over and shot himself in the head.
In 1995, Ramirez began his career with the Miami-Dade Police Department.
