A person carrying a weapon, involved in a shooting near Miami Edison High School, was taken to the hospital by police but unfortunately passed away. Another person with a weapon was also apprehended.

The City of Miami Police and Fire Rescue teams were called to the scene at Northwest Second Avenue and 62nd Street around 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Initially, the call reported a man in his twenties who had been shot in a field.

A local resident, Laquandra Johnson, expressed her sorrow over the sequence of violent incidents.

“It’s really said to see all of this going on in the community when it’s been a violent free-for-all a long time,” she stated.

Johnson mentioned that she was outdoors with her kids when she heard gunshots.

“We were just hanging out clothes, and we just heard the shots, and I basically just pushed my kids in the back door,” she said, “and once we looked, I just saw a guy running, and he just collapsed on the ground.”

The man sustained injuries to his head and leg, according to investigators.

Johnson said that, “I stood from afar, but yeah, they were really working really hard trying to save whoever it was who was shot.”

The paramedics rushed the patient to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. Later, the police confirmed that he unfortunately didn’t make it. Investigators mentioned that they have detained a second armed individual.

“It’s shocking to just hear it and just to have it in our own neighborhood,” said Johnson.

Many hours passed, and even after the sun went down, officers were still present at the scene. It was anticipated that they would stay there through the night.

Detectives haven’t given additional information regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has assumed control of the investigation, which is standard procedure for incidents involving officers.
