A police officer was shot and died, leaving two more people injured in a small Mississippian town. The town is in sorrow.
The incident took place at a traffic checkpoint while Summit Police Department officers were carrying out their responsibilities, according to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
Two officers were injured and one officer was killed when a car pulled up during the exchange. The passenger of the car fired a revolver at the officers.
Officer Troy Floyd of the Summit Police Department was named as the deceased by Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves. Reeves stated that Floyd “was killed today by a criminal, while heroically performing his duties as a law enforcement officer.”
Officers Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts of the McComb Police Department were shot during the altercation, but Reeves stated that their wounds were not life-threatening.
Authorities said that the alleged gunman had been killed.
Officer Floyd’s family and friends received condolences from Reeves, who also stated that law enforcement “represents the very best of Mississippi.”

Our men and women of law enforcement represent the very best of Mississippi.”
“All of Mississippi stands with them as we honor and mourn this hero who has been taken from us too soon,” he stated.
Agents from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are looking into the shooting (MBI). About 75 miles south of Jackson, the state capital, is Summit, which is home to about 1,460 people.
