Morgue Employee Nabbed Stealing Sex Doll from Deceased’s Apartment, Calls It 'Evidence'

The 42-year-old Nebraskan mortuary worker is accused of being involved in a complex plot to get into the home of a recently deceased man and take his life-sized sex doll. He is being charged with several felonies.

After being placed under arrest, Ryan Smith was charged on one count of burglary, first-degree criminal trespass, impersonating a peace officer, and tampering with tangible evidence.

Deputies from the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office responded to a complaint regarding a deceased adult male at an apartment complex in Omaha, Nebraska’s 14000 block of Giles Road on October 6, 2023, according to a probable cause affidavit.

A local funeral home, which typically delivers deceased bodies to the morgue for autopsy, was contacted by a detective on the scene. According to the affidavit, Smith was one of the two personnel sent by the funeral home.

Before Smith and the other employee removed the body, investigators snapped pictures of the body and the room where he was discovered dead.

“Near the body on the bed was a very real life-size version of an adult female,” the detective stated in the affidavit. “Both of the males that came to collect the body made comments about the sex doll found on location.”

After securing the deceased man’s flat, the police departed the area. But the detective got another call about the man’s apartment—who had just died—later that day.

Authorities were informed by an apartment complex manager that Smith had just called the front desk, stating that the investigators “wanted it to collect swabs for biopsy,” and that “the sheriff’s office was requesting that he return to collect the sex toy in the deceased’s bedroom.”

Smith was allowed back into the flat by a member of the administrative staff to retrieve the “sex doll” for “evidentiary purposes.” Smith had carried a body bag with him.

A separate apartment management discovered a short while later that the dead man’s flat had a deadbolt and a chain latch across the door. According to the affidavit, the manager opened the door and said that she saw Smith inside with his “shirt untucked and his pants in disarray.”

Smith informed the manager he would return with a warrant after she refused to let him take the doll. After then, Smith is said to have asked a janitor what time the manager departed the building for the day.

The manager phoned the sheriff’s office to report what had transpired shortly after she had spoken with Smith. She also expressed concern that Smith would return to the building, break in, and take the sex doll.

Upon their return, investigators discovered that the deceased man’s residence had undergone various changes since their departure. Notably, they observed that “the bed had been rearranged” and that a black survival case was resting on the bed.

According to authorities, the sex doll also seemed to have been “altered.”

“The sex doll appeared to have been altered near her thigh area as she has dust on her and bedding,” as per the affidavit. “It appears that something had rubbed her inner thighs. She was also sticky to the touch with gloves on.”

The sex doll was then really taken into evidence by the authorities so that its DNA could be extracted.
