Almost two weeks have passed since Hurricane Helene devastated Florida’s Big Bend upon landfall.

A mother and daughter team from East Texas are planning a lemonade sale to collect money for North Carolina families affected by Hurricane Harvey.

“We got inspired as a family to ask what we could do as a family all the way out here in Texas to maybe help them,” Jessica Bullock explained.

Her daughter was quickly drawn in and involved.

“I have a lot of empathy, and I don’t like to see anyone sad,” Verbena Bullock stated.

The heartbreaking video of the tragic destruction caused by Helene inspired Verbena, who is only six years old.

“Immediately she got very excited and said, I want to do a lemonade stand,” Verbena’s mother stated. “In the spirit of encouraging her generosity and her inspiration, we rolled with it, and are helping her make it happen.”

At first, the six-year-old wanted to bring her coloring books and some plush animals. Later, after reading a children’s book that also served as inspiration, she came up with the concept of a lemonade stand.

“It was a picture of a girl and I could tell that it was a story about her, that she was running a lemonade stand,” she stated.

The mother claimed that her daughter is driven by the desire to change the world and support others who have lost everything.

“It’s important that kids know that their inspired ideas can make a difference in the world, even if it’s small,” Bullock stated.

The Bollocks assert that victims in North Carolina require all available support, regardless of the amount they raise.

“We all have the power to do something important, and every little bit counts,” Jessica stated. “Even though it’s just a little lemonade stand here in East Texas, it’s going to make a small difference for a family and a community somewhere in North Carolina.”

The family is screening potential recipients of the monies, including a family that lost everything and had a girl about Verbena’s age.

The Bullocks have had a ton of help from neighbors and neighborhood organizations to pull off this fundraiser. getting supplies and mugs donated. 100 to 150 cups of lemonade are what they plan to sell.

The mother hopes that her daughter will acquire useful lifelong talents, as well as those of her friends.

“We’re really trying to make sure that the children are at the forefront of the whole project because we know that’s where learning happens best,” Jessica stated. “Whenever they’re excited, inspired and feel like their contributions are really important.”
