A 75-year-old mother is being charged with a felony in a startling instance of neglect in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The mother was accused of abandoning her adult daughter on the floor between a bed and a wall for a full week at home, ostensibly because she wanted the crippled victim to “get up on her own.”
According to records, Rose Chavis was charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent, causing bodily harm to her 40-year-old daughter, and was taken into Marion County jail on Thursday.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the victim fell out of bed in September and was left unaided for a full week, despite the fact that her mother and caregiver were supposedly “aware” of the fall.
The victim was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, paralysis on the left side, and had “other physical/mental impairments” that qualify her as a “endangered adult” under the law.
The inquiry was started, according to court documents, on September 13 after authorities received a report regarding alleged neglect at a house on Lancashire Court where the victim and suspect shared a property.
The victim’s sickness “would most likely require” that she be transported to a “rehabilitation facility,” according to paperwork stating that she remained hospitalized three days later.
The defendant allegedly told the police that although her daughter had been “getting sicker and sicker,” she had advised the victim “not to call the ambulance because they’ve called them too many times before.” Chavis allegedly said that she wanted the victim to “get up on her own.”
The defendant allegedly gave the victim food and drink while she was on the ground but neglected to contact 911. Rather, the woman used a coat hanger to reach the gadget and was able to call 911 on her own, according to police.

“Patients states she fell out of bed 7 days ago and was stuck between her bed and the wall since that time. She reports that her mother was afraid to touch her or call EMS but was providing her with some food/fluids as well as her medications,” according to the affidavit. “She was able to reach her cell phone with a coat hanger and call 911.”
Medical personnel saw “extreme skin sloughing with multiple wounds on the patient’s backside from her knee creases up to her mid back” and the presence of maggots “in some of her wounds” while the victim was in the hospital, according to the records.
“The patient reported pain of 7/10 from her legs,” the affidavit stated.
