Nationwide July Fourth Violence Leaves 33 Dead, Chicago Mayor Mourns

Authorities reported that throughout the long Fourth of July weekend, there were at least 33 gunshot deaths and numerous injuries around the country, including 11 in Chicago.

Historically, one of the deadliest days of the year in the country has been the Fourth of July. A year ago, during the holiday, there were numerous shootings that resulted in over 60 injuries and over 12 fatalities. Additionally, a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade close to Chicago claimed the lives of seven individuals the year prior.

Summertime brings with it more people attending social gatherings, teenagers not attending school, and warmer weather, all of which contribute to an upsurge in violence and mass shootings.

A state of grief exists in Chicago

As of Friday morning over the long July Fourth weekend, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that 11 people had died and 55 had been wounded in gunshots in Chicago alone. One instance of the violence occurred on Thursday during a mass shooting, which claimed the lives of an 8-year-old boy and two women.

Mayor Brandon Johnson remarked that the recent violence “has left our city in a state of grief.”

According to a statement from Johnson, the city will increase police presence throughout the weekend and has scheduled a community gathering for Friday evening.

“We are devastated by the recent violence that has left our city in a state of grief and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and communities impacted by these recent events,” Johnson stated.

Shortly after midnight on Friday, eight people were injured in Chicago’s Little Italy area. Six people were hurt in a shooting in the Austin neighborhood of the city around 90 minutes later. According to police, initial evidence points to two persons exchanging gunfire before fleeing the scene of the separate shootings.

Officials decided to close Chicago’s well-known Lake Michigan beach early every night over the holiday weekend due to recent violent incidents there. There have been numerous shootings and stabbings at 31st Street Beach.

Violence in Southern California

Less than two hours after a fireworks show concluded on July 4, two individuals were killed and three more injured in an incident in Huntington Beach, California, according to authorities. Following reports of a lethal weapon attack on Thursday night, authorities detained a suspect.

10-year-old girl dies in Cleveland; 15-year-old male is arrested in Niles, Ohio; there is a shooting.

Police Chief Jay Holland of the Niles neighborhood in northeastern Ohio reported that a 15-year-old boy was being held in connection with the death of a 23-year-old man who was shot and killed on Thursday night at a Fourth of July celebration at a home.

According to authorities, a 10-year-old girl named Gracie Griffin was shot and killed in a Cleveland area. Whether she was the target of the shooting or what started it is still unknown.

Philadelphia drive-by shooting that ends fatally

On Thursday night, a drive-by shooting occurred in Philadelphia that left one man, 19, dead and six others injured.

Four teenagers were among the injured, who were receiving treatment in hospitals for non-life-threatening wounds. It’s still unknown what set off the shooting.

Five injured and one killed from shootings in the Boston area

After the city’s Fourth of July celebrations, three shootings took place in the Boston region, leaving one man dead. The deadly shooting happened in a park close to Boston’s South End neighborhood on Friday about 1:30 in the morning. Three additional persons were hurt in the city’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood around the same time. A victim of a third gunshot at a gas station subsequently suffered injuries that could be fatal.

In another gunshot that occurred Thursday night in an East Bridgewater, Massachusetts condominium parking lot, a 17-year-old male sustained a stomach wound.

Connecticut woman shot and killed in a car

A woman in Connecticut was found shot in her car early on Friday morning and was later declared deceased at the hospital.

She was identified by police as Hartford resident Shamyria Williams, 23. Reporters were informed by family that they thought she had just departed a Fourth of July celebration.

Six teenagers in Albany, New York were shot at home

Following a gunshot at a sizable gathering, six males, ages 16 to 19, were reportedly receiving non-life-threatening medical treatment at a hospital, according to Albany, New York, police.

At 12:15 a.m. on Friday, police were called to a house in reference to gunfire. Although no casualties were discovered at the scene, authorities claimed to have recovered evidence of gunfire in the street and in the yard behind the house.

A little while later, one of the shot teens flagged down police officers walking down a street, according to the authorities.

Five teenagers were shot in a suburban Detroit party

Following a brawl at a party early on Friday morning in Pontiac, around 30 miles (48.2 kilometers) northwest of Detroit, five teenagers were hurt when gunfire was directed towards a crowd.

Fourteen is the age of three of the victims. The ages of the other two are fifteen. They’re all men. According to authorities, they were brought to hospitals with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.

4 wounded in a shooting at a Tampa nightclub

Following a dispute between the club’s security officer and two males, a shooting occurred early on Friday outside a Tampa adult nightclub, injuring four individuals, according to authorities.

According to authorities, the two males pulled their car up in front of the Pink Pussycat Lounge, and one of them used a revolver to shoot the security guard.

Following surgery at a hospital, the security guard’s status was stable. Three additional males had minor injuries that were not described. Both individuals were detained, according to the police, and accused of many crimes.
