The 530 region of California will get a new area code due to its popularity and scarcity. When consumers in the 530 area code region request a new service or an additional line, they may be allocated a number with an 837 area code as of January 31, 2025.
CPUC stated that current phone numbers—including area codes—and call costs will remain the same.
The CPUC authorized the area code overlay in June 2023 because to the overwhelming demand for new phone numbers in the 530 area code region. The same geographic area that the current 530 area code serves is expanded by adding a second area code with this overlay.
According to the CPUC, clients can get ready in the following ways through 2025:
- Consumers should continue to refer to their phone number as a 10-digit number (3-digit area code + 7-digit phone number), and when providing the number to friends, family, business associates, and other parties, they should also mention the area code.
- Customers should make sure the area code appears on all of their printed checks, personal and company stationery, advertisements, contact details, and ID tags for themselves or their pets.
The majority of 530’s clientele are found in northern California, which includes all or parts of the following counties: Yuba, Lassen, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Yolo, and Butte.

In addition to unincorporated areas, it provides services to the following communities: Yuba City, Chico, Davis, El Dorado Hills, Oroville, Paradise, Placerville, Red Bluff, Redding, South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Woodland, and Yuba City.
Local California customers have never utilized the 837 area code. Texas phone consumers typically utilized the 837 area code before it was adopted in California.
